Geocade's games are free, need no sign-up and work on any device with a web browser, from an interactive whiteboard to a pupil's phone. They make quick lesson starters, end-of-lesson challenges and homework practice.
Why teachers use Geocade
There are no accounts, logins or emails to manage, and the website has no ads. Pupils' scores are saved only in their own browser. Every answer is shown on a real map, so pupils learn from their mistakes rather than just getting a score.
Lesson ideas
- Starter: play today's Name the Map or Pin It together on the board, with the class voting on each answer.
- Locational knowledge: race to Fill the World for a continent, then discuss the countries everyone missed.
- Map projections: play True Size, then talk about why the Mercator map makes Greenland look as big as Africa.
- Borders: use Neighbours to explore which countries are landlocked and which border the most others.
- Team game: run Party mode on the projector with two to six teams taking turns on the same questions.
Which games suit which ages?
Most games suit ages 9 and up. True Size, Flag Rush and Party mode work well for younger pupils, while Groups, Clues and Daily Route suit older pupils and adults who enjoy a puzzle.
Curriculum links
The games support locational knowledge of the world's countries, capitals and continents, using world maps and globes, and understanding scale and distance. In England, that fits the national curriculum's geography aims at Key Stages 2 and 3.
